software engineerUniversity project highlights
July 23, 2023I studied Creative Computing at Goldsmiths University
and graduated
in 2017. During my three years, there were a range of modules we were taught with some requiring us
to create projects. Here are some highlighted ones that I really enjoyed making!
Diistress
Diistress (pronounced "dee-stress"; a play on words with "distress" and "de-stress") was my final year project as a Creative Computing undergraduate. I decided to create a virtual experience that would utilise the user's heart rate in real time to affect the conditions of the experience. The objective was to present stress in a visual form so that users would be attune to their stress levels to see how their body reacted to the environment.
Fey
Fey (which is phonetically how you would say "to fly" in Cantonese) was a game I created during my undergraduate degree; I would have been in my second year when I created this. I intended to make something that matched the physics of a real paper plane in flight...but I remember bumping into a lot of problems. In the end, I settled with this game.
Ballfare
Ballfare was a game I created during my undergraduate degree. It's similar to a tower defence game in that you have to defend your square from bouncing balls, but the mechanics differ slightly! You are given blocks to place around your square to protect it from incoming balls, but they're not exempt from taking damage. If a ball collides with one of your normal blocks, it will gradually loses its health and this is denoted by the opacity reducing. The balls also lose health when they hit the sides so they have a similar behaviour too.
Gestalt Principles
I believe this was part of my coursework for the Perception and Multimedia Computing module I did at university where we had to demonstrate our understanding of the Gestalt Principles. Looking back at this video, the interaction and design of some of the states are really cool - I'm surprised I thought of them!
